2012 is here (ok in 2 days) and it is time to figure out what you want out of the New Year. What are your goals? Who do you want to be? How do you want to feel? What are your fitness goals, health goals, relationship goals and life goals for 2012?

How many of your goals from 2011 did you successfully complete? If you were not able to complete them, as you would have liked, reframe them and make them a goal for 2012.

Weight loss is a goal that comes up for a lot of people. Especially after the holidays and the extra weight we might have gained. How many pounds do you want to lose and how are you going to go about losing the weight? Having a goal is the start, but you have to have some sort of guidelines to follow so that you can be successful in your goal. There are many different ways to go about losing weight. The next few blogs this month are going to focus on different aspects that can and do play into our weight loss.

Weight loss is more than just counting calories and getting a decrease in weight. In my mind weight loss has to become a lifestyle change, so that you don't put the weight back on shortly after you lose it because you have slacked a little on the exercise or started eating more carbohydrates.

I often start weight loss programs with my patients by not only evaluating their diet and exercise patterns, but also by checking hormones. Estrogen, Progesterone, Thyroid and Cortisol all play a part in where we store fat and how easily it can come off the body. I usually look at estrogen, progesterone and cortisol though salivary testing; while thyroid is evaluated though blood work.

I have found the best weight loss plan is a plan that focuses on many different components of life. They don't have to be drastic changes for the most part, small changes can lead to some big weight loss. Even having 10 fewer calories a day can lead to a 1-pound weight loss at the end of the year. Just imagine how adding exercise, detoxification, food allergies testing, hormone balancing and many more things can increase your potential weight lose in 2012!
